The Sassoon & Rachel Sopher Regional Center for the Aged in Acco

Of the Center's 216 residents, 84 are Holocaust survivors and 110 are immigrants from the Former Soviet Union.

The Center has made it a goal to serve as a supportive and warm home for Holocaust survivors and individuals who have had difficult lives. Of the hundreds of residents in the home, only seventeen are private  residents.

The Center has 7 wards:

  • 2 assisted living units
  • 3 nursing units
  • 2 dementia units

Established in 1978 by Eshel (JDC’s Association for the Planning and Development of Services for the Aged) and the Israeli Government, the Center is the only public nursing home in the Western Galilee.

The Center is held in high esteem by Israel’s Welfare and Health Ministries, and has been well evaluated in every assessment. It is a registered non-profit organization in Israel  that services the entire Western Galilee, which has a population of approximately 250,000 residents and is defined as Israel’s periphery.

  1. The Trustees were associated as per Section 36 of the regulations
  2. The Center is a Hekdesh according to an order from April 12, 1973, publicized in Kovetz Takanot 2996, HKR 590000105

Emergency Absorption

The Center is the only nursing home in its region that indiscriminately opens its doors in all emergency cases, such that no senior citizen who needs a home is ever turned away.

Israel’s Welfare and Health Ministries have acknowledged the unique readiness of the Center to serve as a refuge for elderly victims of abuse and neglect.

In some cases, individual have been evacuated with emergency orders from their homes due to neglect or abuse, or have been evacuated from pirate homes. These individuals often end up becoming permanent residents of the Center.

Our Staff

The Center is operated by a large staff of trained nurses, aides, and therapists who work together to ensure that residents have the highest possible quality of life.

The staff members at the Center place an emphasis on each individual’s needs and preserve personal dignity as much as possible, particularly when a resident’s mental and physical aptitude is deteriorating.

The Center has an unusually dedicated and caring professional staff that is experienced specifically in working with an underprivileged population.

While working at the Center, staff members continue to receive professional training and development.

Holiday Celebrations

The Center celebrates the Jewish and Israeli holidays, marking the annual cycle of seasonal festivals and providing residents with a festive and inclusive home feeling at regular intervals throughout the year:

Rosh Hashanah is always celebrated with a special toast that is independently hosted by each unit.

For Sukkot, a Sukkah constructed in the courtyard outside the building, and residents enjoy sitting in the Sukkah at different times of the day according to a pre-determined schedule.

The central event of Chanukah is an annual bazaar, in which the Rabbi of Acco participates by lighting Chanukah candles together with one of the residents. Recently, as part of the evening, students of the Acco Conservatory came to sing and play wind instruments. In addition to the bazaar, Chanukah is celebrated independently in each unit.

The staff makes sure to celebrate birthdays and to keep up the spirits of the residents, many of whom have little if any family.

Daily Schedule

The higher functioning seniors at the Center take part in a varied schedule of creative, therapeutic, and social activities, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, arts and crafts, music appreciation, animal therapy, gardening work, social and cognitive games, current events, trips, concerts, and performances.

There is a carefully organized, pre-determined daily and weekly schedule which ensures that residents are out of their rooms throughout the morning and afternoon hours.

Connecting with the Community

The Center maintains a strong connection with the Acco community – a connection that is important to the residents no less than the volunteers, who include the elderly, teenagers, and school children who come to visit.

Our Mission

Part of what makes the Center so special is its awareness and ongoing commitment to three distinct aspects of care: attending to the needs of each resident; investing in the overall management of the home; and providing support for its devoted staff.

The Center’s philosophy can be defined as follows:

  1. The Center is wholly committed to caring for each resident’s needs, acting from a place of love and acceptance, and providing dedicated and professional care while granting each resident the respect, privacy, and dignity that he or she deserves.
  2. The Center offers a loving atmosphere for residents of the home and strives in all areas to create a high quality of life for each and every resident. We believe in supporting and empowering the residents of the home in the continued expression and development of their cognitive, social, and creative skills. We offer a comprehensive and inclusive solution for elderly residents of our community by providing a full range of services in the areas of healthcare, welfare, and recreation.
  3. The Center recognizes the contributions and personal dedication of its staff, and is committed to expanding and developing the professional skills and training of each staff member.
